Hello from SARATONIN! This week, I wanted to share this question and answer about creativity and productivity from my Patreon.
So, I'm an artist or whatever and I've always struggled with the idea side of creating art. I'm very technically proficient, I don't doubt my artistic abilities at all, I just often question if I'm creating something worth viewing. How do you come up with ideas that seem fresh and/or with purpose? I'm looking to challenge myself both in subject matter and personal investment, as I'm well aware of the lack of self in my work. I guess I'm asking how do I go about developing a process of expanding on an idea in a way that feels meaningful?
The best advice I can give is to create something that needs to emerge from you. If you feel a strong pull to do it, do it and don't worry about whether anyone else will care. If it's authentic and comes from a true, real place, someone else will relate to it.
Another bit of advice is to create the art you need to see in the world, or that a younger version of you needed to see in the world. I promise it will be meaningful to more folks than just you.
It's not on you to determine if it's worthwhile or not to others. You're a vessel and it's meant to flow through you and out to the world. What happens after that ain't up to us.
My goodness, thank you for this question. It reminded me of something I need to stop ignoring.Â
More resources especially (but not exclusively!) for Substackers…
Everyone's questions are a gift. So is your presence here. Thank you.
Love you,
Sara
