I am obsessed with my home state of New Jersey, and as I explain in this TikTok from last night, I fear we Jerseyans shall only grow more obnoxious in our boisterous pride.
Senator Booker really inflamed the ol’ Jersey pride in a massive way. We are already such an impassioned people. I’ve seen Jersey folks ask where the milk is at in Krauszer’s, QuickChek and Wawa with the same emotional intensity Senator Booker gave you last night. We’re always about a minute away from either flipping a table or running up one of our (tiny) mountains. What he did was 100% him but also 1000% us - at least, that’s what some of us (ahem) will say while sitting on our asses eating popcorn and watching him do the real work.
Anyway, that was a nice spot of brightness to kick off April. It gave a lot of us some enthusiasm and some hope. We need that.
It’s raining something fierce here in Chicago, and we’re supposed to have winds of up to 40 mph, and waves on Lake Michigan from 6 to 14 feet high. The lake is so beautiful, and I get to see it every day. I’m moving relatively soonish to a new neighborhood, but I’ll always cherish the days and nights I’ve gotten to spend staring out at the lake (even when there was loud tuckpointing aka masonry work six out of seven days a week for the first five fucking months I lived here.)
Soon, I’m heading to Springfield, IL for the first of what I hope will be several educational and fun (perhaps!) visits to do research for my book on Abraham Lincoln. It is a curious thing and a wonderful one to be able to return to my first loves - writing, reading, and history - and to get to reach out to some educators, historians, journalists, and elected officials in order to interview them for the book.
I would love if you supported my work here with a paid subscription, but I’m glad you’re here no matter what. I also encourage you to financially (or emotionally!) support these fine creatures:
and the fabulous .My list could go on for far too long, but I’ve got two other areas of focus today: my job at a nonprofit and a bigass bowl of matzo ball soup. So I shall move along, and wish you the very best.
Love and other indoor sports,
