Hello, you sensual demon angel people. It is beautiful to be here! You’ll get four issues of SARATONIN this month, and paid subscribers will get two extra posts just for their curious/elegant eyeballs.
We do a few different types of posts over here in SARATONINville: straight-up essays, recommendation posts, and a random third kind of thing that can be anything. This is the recommendation type. I hope you enjoy!
Recommendations
by inspired exactly this type of recommendations post.Caramel apples - Will you break a crown or simply enjoy a perfect little mouthful of autumn? Go to Kilwins in Philly or your local caramel apple establishment and see what happens! You can also make them at home, of course, you DIY scamps.
I caught some deer snuggling on camera so that’s over on my Instagram.
There is a bluegrass tribute album for Guns ‘n’ Roses and this version of “Patience” by Iron Horse makes me cry?
Driving down certain tiny streets of Philly’s Washington Square/Midtown Village/Gayborhood in an SUV packed with production gear (for a photoshoot! My moving picture writing and acting unions are on strike!) was terrifying until I dissociated and pretended it was a video game where I won points for not hitting anyone or anything (there were no other humans or cars on the street, which helped.) I drive in all five NYC boroughs all the time. I spent years living in Los Angeles and driving in that traffic. I’ve done plenty of twisty-turny mountain roads with no guardrails and survived. But I was not sure I would survive this enchanting little cobblestone death trap. Still, I breathed through it and didn’t even shit myself. And I injured no trees or historic homes. Huzzah!
Anyway, here’s a wonderful Lonely Planet article about eight Black history sites in Philly.

I am grateful to still have a bit of reading (well, audiobook listening) left to go in Henry David Thoreau: A Life by Laura Dassow Walls. She’s a professor at Notre Dame and a very fine biographer. She really gives one the feeling of meeting Thoreau the neighbor, brother, son, and friend.
I love Butcher & Bee in Charleston, SC. Looks like they’ve got two coffee shops now, as well!
I always enjoy a whimsical candle. Candlehand designs and makes candles in Lithuania. We love an EU candle, honey!
Marzipan - Not to eat, just to look at. These are at Kilwins at 13th and Walnut in Philly.
Okay, that’s all for now. The cold brew coffee is kicking in and my cat has dug under the quilts on the bed in order to presumably build a cave from which she can better control the tides with her mind. Love and appreciate you subscribers! Please share this post and/or check out the links below if you’re in the mood. Have a beautiful, restful weekend!
Love,
Sara
