Yes, my theory when I was a teacher was that if the kids were resistant to reading the books deemed classics by the Powers That Be, perhaps I could pair one of those books with something they might find more palatable - a kind of gateway drug, in a positive way. Often the active readers dove right into the older books, but the reluctant readers were helped in their interest or understanding by pairing the older book with a contemporary film adaptation or book to compare and contrast. Sometimes they found they liked the original more because it felt more emotionally truthful to them, even if they didn't like some of the language or gender roles.
I loved this novel. Texas is an odd state.
