Sara, thank you. As someone who used to live in Asheville, worked at Biltmore, and the Starbucks in Biltmore Village, as well as an Elem School off Tunnel Rd, lived near Swannanoa for a time, still have friends in the area, I’m positively heartbroken. ❤️ I’m in Charlotte now, and we’re organizing supply drops as best we can.
For anyone that knows folks in WNC, this is the best live document I’ve come across so far, for where help is located at any given time. (I believe they are reformatting it currently; should be live again later this evening)
Thank you Ms. Sara for giving a shout out for those of us battered by Helene. We have similar issues here in Boone and it is like this for hundreds of miles south.
People need help. That is what is important to know. Human beings need help.
I adore you for many things but especially for looking out for your WNC comrades and friends.
I’m so sorry Boone is suffering too…my friend has a couple family members at App State and the kids went home. The photos of Chimney Rock were heartbreaking too.
Hi Sherry, it's all a freaking mess. Yancey county, Avery county, Ashe county, Watauga county are, for many, beyond devastation, particularly those in low lying areas. Spruce Pine hit very hard with flooding. As os Boone. Many have no power, water or cell service and authorities say it could be many days if not weeks.
Trying to clean out all the flooded items from my basement today. So much debris. Boone is telling residents to pile it up along the public roadside for a hired contractor to pick up. Local landfill is closed until further notice.
It reminds me of the garbage strike in nyc many years ago without the possibility of a positive outcome for workers.
Gonna keep an eye on this for links. My mom went to high school in Lenoir and has friends in Boone and the area. It's awful to see the devestation. Thank you for boosting, Sara.
Thank you Sara for this loving report on my home state. I had not heard from a friend who was in the path out near Spruce Pines. We finally heard from her thank goodness.
Never in my life have I heard of flooding like that in the mountains. Asheville was a surprise and my heart simply breaks for Swannanoa.
We are a tough stoic lot when it gets tough, putting our heads down and doing the work, knowing that this, too, shall pass. That’s that Scotch/Irish/German stock.

Honey, thank you!!!!! Aren’t we lucky to have gotten to live up there? I love it so much.
Thank Angela B I wanted to explore more local contributions rather than a larger organization.
BTW for resident of CLT. Grew up over on the N Graham side and lived as well as Kenilworth edge of Dilworth.

My ex and his wife live over in Jefferson but are on a ridge so did not experience any flooding. Can you report to me on Spruce Pines area?

It's all very sad.
Thank you for an "on the ground" report. We haven't heard much from the friend directly since she is in survival model.
